Welcome
This is my first post at my latest blog, Blackbird and the Wolf, a blog about Modern Day Woodworking with Old World Style, and I wanted to welcome everyone to the blog, and thank you for checking it out.
A few years ago, I reconnected with a longtime hobby of mine, Woodworking. It was at this time that I really began to learn more, and I started searching out tools and techniques that our ancestors used to craft their homes, furniture, and tools with. I developed a fondness for working with Hand Tools, and since then I can find a project to satisfy my thirst for more Woodworking Knowledge and Skill.
I in no way claim to be a Hand Tool only Woodworker, I definitely use some power tools and I would never give up my table saw, jointer or planer. But, I recognize and understand that certain hand tools can be just as effective, if not quicker and easier to use than some power tools. I have developed a method that I call Modern Day Woodworking with Old World Style, where power tools are used only when needed, and are not relied on too heavily. I cut mortises, tenons, and dovetails by hand, but I use the table saw to rip and crosscut lumber to size. I tend to use hand planes for all final dimensioning, but I will use my jointer and planer to get the lumber square and rough cut to size. I know there are many people out there that are die hard Hand Tool only Woodworkers, and I say, "to each his own." My skills are not nearly as refined or even perfected as much as those Hand Tool Only Woodworkers, so I rely on my power tools when needed.
I look forward to sharing many of the projects I embark on, and seeing what everyone has to say as you watch me hone my skills and grow my knowledge of woodworking. A couple projects to keep an eye out for that I'm starting on soon or have just started:
